DWU marks 30th Anniversary with Thanksgiving MASS and Wewak FLOAT
WEWAK, EAST SEPIK — September 14, 2026: Divine Word University (DWU) officially launched its 30th Anniversary celebrations on Monday at its St Benedict's Campus in Wewak with a Thanksgiving Mass and a colorful float through Wewak Town. The anniversary celebrations commenced with a Thanksgiving Mass at the DWU St Benedict's Campus Chapel, led by Fr. Calistus Manse, Vicar General, Wewak Catholic Diocese. Students, staff, alumni, and members of the wider university community gathered to give thanks for God's blessings and guidance throughout the university's 30-year journey.
In his homily, Fr. Calistus encouraged the DWU community to remain inspired by the Word of God and to put its teachings into practice. Reflecting on John 3:16, he reminded those gathered of God's enduring love and the call to live lives grounded in faith, compassion, and service. DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, SVD, acknowledged the contributions of missionaries, staff, students, alumni, partners, the Government of Papua New Guinea, and the wider university community in establishing and supporting DWU's growth over the past three decades.
Following the Mass, the university community took to the streets of Wewak for a vibrant anniversary float. Students, staff, and supporters filled the town with color, music, and excitement as they celebrated 30 years of excellence in education, service, and community transformation. A significant part of the day's program was a gathering between DWU President Professor Fr. Philip Gibbs, SVD, President-elect Rev. Dr. Jose Orathinkal, SVD, and DWU alumni in Wewak.
The gathering highlighted the enduring bond shared by members of the DWU family, even after graduation and across different professions and locations. Fr. Philip encouraged alumni to continue strengthening their connections and to remain faithful to the Pasin Diwai—the spirit and values that define Divine Word University. He emphasized the importance of supporting one another, looking after one another, and walking together as one community.
The 30th Anniversary celebrations will continue through Wednesday, culminating in Papua New Guinea's Independence Day celebrations. The anniversary provides an opportunity for the university community to honor its history, celebrate its achievements, and look forward to a future of empowering minds and transforming lives.
As DWU celebrates three decades of service to Papua New Guinea and beyond, the university continues to uphold its commitment to excellence, unity, compassion, and community transformation.

Thanksgiving Mass led by Fr. Calistus Manse, Vicar General.
