Aims

The Diploma in Management (DipM) program is a 2-year program of study at National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 5 (as per the PNGNQF). The Diploma in Management program offers units relevant in developing creative and analytical skills to manage their own roles and the ever changing work environment. The units in the program place the learner on par with global contexts through knowledge acquisition and understanding with practical and creative applications.

The Diploma in Management program aims to prepare managers and leaders of different organizations with theoretical and practical management skills that are applicable to manage people and organizational resources. The program is aligned well with strategic plans of the University, PNG’s National Qualification Framework and in response to PNG Vision 2050. The program is necessary for public and private sector organisations, church organisations, private-run businesses and non-government organisations (NGOs) and other institutions, and can fit well into their staff development program.

Entry requirement

Must be currently employed at time of study.
Grade 12 graduates with relevant post-secondary certificates.
Matriculated to grade 12 or equivalent.
At least 3 years of work experience or self-employment.
Currently or aspiring to be in supervisory role.
Must be computer / internet literate.

Dates:
The programs are offered at various times throughout the year.

Duration of study

Structure:
Students are required to attend an intensive two-week residential component at Port Moresby Campus during each semester. Directed and practical assignments relating to workplace applications must then be completed in the student’s own time.

The program is conducted through a distance-learning mode using well-established principles of adult learning applied to our Papua New Guinea context.

Facilities:
Divine Word University – Port Moresby Campus is a non-residential campus offering excellent learning and teaching facilities in a conducive learning environment.

Students who graduate with a Diploma with a minimum of C grade acquired are eligible to apply for the Bachelor of Management degree program.

Units Offered

SEMESTER ONE

FM231 Ethical Issues in Management:

This unit will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Christian ethical issues, dilemmas and challenges faced by managers and employees in the contemporary workplace. We will turn our attention to the nature of unethical behavior, including a discussion of different forms and definitions in the academic literature. We will consider how individuals respond when they come across unethical behavior in organizations. Students will study the importance of ethics and analyze ethical issues in the context of leadership and management of organizations. They will also explore principles of Christian Ethics, compare, and contrast it to the Melanesian ethical principles, with some insight into the Big Man style of leadership in Papua New Guinea

FM259 Computer Applications:

In this unit, students develop competencies in word processing and power point presentations. Word processing and power point presentation are essential skills for report writing and academic presentations or presentations at workplace settings. A comprehensive introduction to word-processing and power-point presentation software is provided where students will engage in hands-on practical exercises to learn and gain competitive skills in word processing and power-point presentations.

SEMESTER TWO

FM233 Management Fundamentals:

This unit provides all fundamental knowledge on the principles and practices of management and the roles of manager in the organization. It mainly revolves around the basic functions of managers, specifically planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Apart from providing the students with the beginning level of understanding management principles, case studies are analyzed using various and appropriate strategies and techniques based on relevant principles and theories.

FM250 Introduction to Taxation:

In this unit the students will understand the provisions on income tax laws for individuals, resident and non-resident, companies and other businesses and allowable deductions. Other taxes imposed by PNG will also be covered for understanding business legal requirements and compliance. Participants will be engaged in practical exercises on the tax issues and problems commonly encountered by individuals and companies alike.

SEMESTER THREE

FM260 Finance and Resource Management:

In this unit, students acquire the knowledge on how finance and other resources are managed in different organisations and are able to effectively manage all resource to meet targets of the organisation. Financial and all other resources have to be managed well to enable businesses to operate and function to achieve the goals and objectives of the business. Finance affects the lives of every person and every organisation and proper management will result in the outcomes to be realised.

FM261 Managing Customer Service:

In this unit, students acquire knowledge, skills and develop positive attitudes in managing customer service in their workplaces. The key concepts of customer service management are presented. It then provides explanation on the significance of managing customer service in the modern business environment. It further considers the key elements in delivering customer service excellence. The other important components of managing customer service, evaluating customer feedback and instituting relevant actions for maintaining customer service for long-term competitive edge also are covered in the discussion.

SEMESTER FOUR

FM235 Introduction to Organizational Behavior:

In this unit, students present various views of Organizational behavior in management. It deals with the dynamic functions and responsibilities of different organizations. Monitoring of individual and group performance and the challenging role of creating a climate where employees will manifest desirable behavior in the workplace. Topics include an overview of Individual and Group Behaviour and the three levels of organizational behaviour. OB looks at organizations as entities, the forces that shape them, and their impact on the members.

FM251 Managing Projects:

In this unit, student students view all undertakings in their lives, which require resources that exist in limited quantities for their completion as a project. Participants will identify various components of a project, analyse project scope, determine critical tasks, and the critical path to complete the project within the resources constraints. Practical project concepts include project initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, updating, completing and closing. A project management application software tool will be used to manage projects, and students are expected to write individual project closing reports.

The Bursar is the officer in charge of the business and financial aspects of DWU administration. She is assisted by a Director of Finance, Accountant, Treasurer and Purchasing Officer.

The Finance Division provides financial support in the realisation of the Divine Word University Mission and the Division seeks to:

Develop an effective financial stewardship rather than merely financial control that would improve operational efficiency.
Ensure the proper allocation of available financial resources consistent with the operational and development needs of the University.
Assure an effective procurement system for goods and services required by the different units of the University.
Maintain an accounting system that would generate accurate and timely financial information for decision-making.
Ascertain the availability of funds for the operational and development needs of the University through efficient cash management.
Maintain an efficient and effective academic information system responsive to the educational needs of the clientele and directly supportive of administrative decision-making.
