Department of Information Systems

The Department of Information Systems (IS) aims to provide the workforce of Papua New Guinea with professionals who are competent to assist, and provide leadership in, the use, development and maintenance of electronic digital technology, particularly as it impacts corporate and service sectors of the national economy. The program offered by the Department is within the discipline area commonly known as Information Systems, which studies computer applications in-so-far as they support the flow of electronic information in the business and service functions of organizations within a modern technological society. To achieve the goals of our program to serve the national economy we also include a strong component of Information Technology (IT) to assist infrastructure development in a developing country. IS/IT is to be distinguished from the discipline of Computer Science which is more concerned with the underlying scientific and mathematical principles of electronic digital technology. It is also to be distinguished from the discipline of Computer Technology which has a focus on electronic digital hardware.

The Department values pastoral care of students, work experience, an annual Information Systems Symposium, and the implementation of international standards in all our units. Our program design has been assisted by partnerships with international scholars including Prof Deane Arganbright, DWU Emeritus Professor, and others from institutions such as La Trobe University, Australia and Alphanets, Solomon Islands.

The Bachelor of Information Systems program aims to provide students with values, attitudes, knowledge and skills in Information Systems and their management that enable them to contribute significantly to the understanding and ethical management of the developing Information System’s infrastructure of modern PNG, both within the home or small office and within larger organizations.
