Welcome to Department of Mathemattics and Computing Science

Department of Mathematics and Computing Science

On behalf of the Mathematics and Computing Science Department at Divine Word University in Madang campus, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to this 2023 academic year. We are proud that in more than a decade exceptional students from all across Papua New Guinea have chosen our department to undertake their graduate studies. We are delighted to testify that after the completion of their degree, more of our graduates evolve into building successful careers and are employed in high demanding technological working environments, academia, and beyond.

The MCS program is designed to give our students a broader perspective beyond their interested disciplines and their accustomed method of learning. Students are challenged to think abstractly and critically analyze challenging problems that eventually lead to logical solutions. We are committed in our profession to ensure that our students achieve theoretical and practical skills in mathematics and computing science not only by face-to-face meetings in class, but also through a series of research, field study, student activities, seminars, and community service engagements.

This year, the department is embarking on introducing new areas of discipline in the program that will capture cybersecurity and cloud computing. We believe that gaining knowledge in such discipline apart from computer networking, computer programming, database designs, mobile programming, data analysis, mathematical modeling, and mathematical analysis will equip our graduates with high digital and analytical skills who will provide solutions to ICT and related problems within Papua New Guinea and abroad. Another major project is to establish a testing center here at DWU campus so we could conduct industrial examinations for our students, staff and external students to acquire industrial certifications.

The DWU theme for this year is "The end of knowledge should be service to others." by Cesar Chavez. Generally, the theme means the end result of all knowledge gained should be put to good use for the benefit of humanity. The Divine Word of God reaffirms this quote in 1 Peter 4:10 “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms”. We are all uniquely fashioned by our Creator therefore l invite you all to serve each other with your professional knowledge and skills. With that, I wish you all God's favor and abundant blessings for this 2023 academic year.

Mr Cyril Sarsoruo
Head of Mathematics and Computing Science Department.
